One of the most popular activities on the internet today by far is shopping. It has much allure to it, you can shop at your leisure, anytime, and thanks to smartphones, anywhere.  Although the Internet began to advance in popularity among the general public in 1994, it took another few years to develop the right security protocols (for example, HTTP) and DSL to create the right infrastructure for e-commerce and give birth to pioneers such as Amazon and eBay.  Although the dot-com crash in 2000 led to the bankruptcy and closure of many e-commerce companies, the “brick and mortar” retailers recognized the advantages of electronic commerce and began to add such capabilities to their websites.  Amazon and Ebay were among the first Internet companies to allow electronic transactions and thanks to the founders of these once startup companies we now have a huge e-commerce sector doing a staggering $1.915 trillion in sales last year with double-digit growth expected to continue through 202 when sales will top $4 trillion.

As consumer-facing businesses, there is an enormous need for a brand name that’s memorable, easy to remember and spell and of course the matching .com domain name. Below are 10 e-commerce companies that have got just that: a great brand with the matching .com

Etsy is an e-commerce site and a smartphone application for buying and selling handmade and vintage items. The company was launched 12 years ago and successfully listed on the Nasdaq in 2015 as a public company. In 2016, the website generated revenues worth 365 million.

JD.com is an online Chinese computer, communication, and consumer electronics retailer. It is one of the two largest B2C online retailers in China by transaction volume and revenue, a member of the Fortune Global 500 and a major competitor to Alibaba-run Tmall. In 2015, George Kirikos reported that browsing through some SEC filing the JD.com domain may have sold for as much as $5 Million dollars.

Hong Kong-based Grana is a direct-to-consumer online fashion brand designing wardrobe essentials in-house, using the finest fabrics from around the world, available at honest prices. I did a consulting project at Grana earlier this year when Co-Founder and CEO Luke Grana told me he bought the Grana.com domain name for less than $5,000 Australian dollars a couple of years before starting the business.

Lazada might not ring a bell for European or US readers but the Lazada Group operates Lazada.com which is Southeast Asia’s number one online shopping and selling destination. As of April 2016, Lazada is majority-owned by Alibaba Group. The Lazada.com domain name was purchased at BrandBucket.com for an undisclosed sum.

This list wouldn’t be complete without the godfather of e-commerce: Amazon.  Founded by Jeff Bezos in July 1994 it has become the largest Internet-based retailer in the world by total sales and market capitalization and the company is worth almost twice as much as Walmart today. Fun fact: Jeff considered calling his company Relentless.com before going with Amazon.com in the end. The domain name still redirects to the Amazon.com website today.

Casper is a sleep startup that launched with an outrageously comfortable mattress sold directly to consumers — eliminating commission driven, inflated prices. The company started off with the CasperSleep.com domain name but wisely acquired the matching Casper.com domain name in 2015

The Honest Company is an American consumer goods company, co-founded by actress Jessica Alba, that creates effective, safe, eco-friendly, beautiful, convenient, and affordable products for babies and homes. The company had $170 million in 2014 sales and was valued at $1.7 billion as of August 2015.  The company acquired the Honest.com domain name for $180,000 trough GoDaddy in December 2011.

Wish is the leading mobile commerce platform in North America and Europe. The company gives it’s users access to the most affordable, convenient, and effective shopping mall and affordable goods. The San Fransisco-based company has raised more than $1 Billon dollars in funding and it’s website is ranked among the top 25 largest shopping sites in the world.

Bol.com is an online retailer involved in providing books, entertainment, electronic devices, and toys for its clients. Founded back in 1999 the site is considered the Amazon.com of the Netherlands. Since 2012 the site is owned by Ahold, an international group of quality supermarkets based in Europe.

What better company to end this list with then Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. Started in 1999 by Jack Ma, the company is now the world’s largest retailer as of April 2016 surpassing Walmart, with operations in over 200 countries, as well as one of the largest Internet companies. Alibaba has been generating more gross merchandise volume than Amazon and eBay combined.
