I have been publishing a weekly list with newly funded startups and their domain names for almost two and a half years now and since the very first post, the reader comments have often been regarding the poor domain name choices these startups make. From hyphenated domains to strange pre or suffixes, domain hacks, and second class TLDs, we’ve seen it all over the years. But it isn’t always bad. I am usually able to find at least a handful of companies that chose a nice brand name and managed to register or acquire the matching .com. The reason many startups start out with a terrible domain name is often that the matching.com is already taken and in use or it is considered too much of an expense to acquire. With this post, I want to show that yes, it is possible to come up with a great name for your company AND acquire the matching .com domain name for $10,000 or less.
